Why Contact Lens Exams Matter

Regular eye exams are essential in caring for your vision, but if you wear contacts, you’ll also need a contact lens exam. A standard comprehensive eye exam helps us check your overall eye health and update your glasses prescription, but a contact lens exam involves more, including evaluating factors essential for fitting contact lenses.

We measure your corneal curvature, assess your tear quality, and examine eyelid health to provide a comfortable, healthy fit for your contacts.

Your Guide to Contact Lens Options

At Downtown Optometry, we help you find contact lenses that fit your needs and lifestyle. We know everyone’s vision is different, so we offer a range of personalized options. For example, dry eye requires moisture-retaining lenses, astigmatism needs toric lenses, and allergies often call for daily disposables.

During your fitting, we’ll guide you through our recommendations, considering your eye health and individual vision requirements so you can confidently make an informed choice.

Here’s a quick look at a few types we provide to help you consider what works for your eyes and daily life.

Daily disposable lenses are soft contacts designed for one-day use. They can make life easier and keep your eyes healthy—just wear them, toss them, and start fresh the next day with no cleaning required.

Benefits: Wearing a fresh pair daily reduces the risk of infections and allergies. They can benefit people with sensitive eyes, busy schedules, or anyone who loves convenience. Disposable lenses are great for occasional use, like sports, travel, or special events.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) offers a simple, safe, and effective way to manage nearsightedness (myopia). By wearing specially designed gas-permeable lenses overnight, you can gently reshape your cornea, allowing you to enjoy clear vision throughout the day—no need for glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Benefits: It can help slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in kids, teens, and young adults, promoting healthier vision long-term. It’s nonsurgical, reversible, and puts you in control of your eye care.

If you have astigmatism, you know how frustrating blurry vision can be. Toric contact lenses are designed to correct your eye’s uneven curvature, giving you clearer, more comfortable vision. They have features to help the lenses stay in place and are personalized to your eye shape.

Benefits: Toric lenses can provide clear, comfortable, and reliable vision correction for individuals with astigmatism. Whether you prefer daily disposables, monthly replacements, or something in between, there’s a toric option for you.

Multifocal lenses are designed to correct presbyopia, an age-related condition that makes it difficult to focus on close objects. These lenses incorporate different powers to provide clear vision at all distances—near, intermediate, and far.

Benefits: Eliminates the need for reading glasses or bifocals. Provides a smooth transition between different distances.

You might benefit from hybrid lenses if you’re looking for a balance between clear vision and comfort. Hybrid lenses combine the sharp visual clarity of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses with the soft, gentle feel of a flexible rim.

Benefits: Hybrid lenses can provide precise visual acuity, especially if you have irregular corneas. They’re designed to be more comfortable than traditional RGP lenses, so you can focus on your day without worrying about discomfort.

Aspheric lenses have a more complex (flatter) front surface shape that sets them apart from standard (spherical) lenses. This design helps reduce distortions and enhance clarity, so you can enjoy sharper, more vibrant vision.

Benefits: Reduced distortions mean fewer distractions like blurred edges and a noticeable improvement in image quality, especially in low light. By reducing spherical aberrations, these lenses can give you clearer, crisper vision and can even help improve contrast sensitivity.

What to Expect at Your Contact Lens Exam & Fittings

Your contact lens exam starts with a comprehensive eye exam to assess your eye health and determine your prescription. We’ll discuss your lifestyle, visual needs, and contact lens preferences.

Using modern technology like the MYAH topographer, we map your eye’s surface to recommend a suitable lens type, material, and fit for your unique needs. The MYAH is also instrumental in myopia management, particularly for ortho-k, allowing us to monitor corneal changes and track treatment effectiveness over time.

After finding your fit, we’ll guide you through a trial fitting and teach you how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses. A follow-up visit, scheduled about 1 week later, helps us evaluate the fit and how you’re adapting. Our goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable with your lenses.
