Common Dry Eye Symptoms & Signs

Every pair of eyes is unique, so dry eye symptoms can differ from person to person. Common symptoms include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • A gritty or sandy feeling
  • Redness or irritation
  • Blurry vision that fluctuates
  • Eye fatigue
  • Light sensitivity
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Watery eyes (a reflex response to dryness)
  • Feeling like something is in your eye

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, we can help.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears they produce are of poor quality. Tears are essential for lubricating and nourishing the surface of the eyes, and when this tear film is compromised, it leads to uncomfortable symptoms.

Several factors can contribute to dry eye, including:

  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes
  • Computer use & screen time
  • Certain medical conditions (e.g., arthritis, autoimmune diseases)
  • Medications (e.g., antihistamines, decongestants)
  • Environmental factors (e.g., dry air, wind)
  • Contact lens wear
  • Eyelid problems

Find Personalized Relief with a Dry Eye Consultation

Dry eye can have many causes, so a personalized treatment approach is essential. We provide comprehensive dry eye assessments at Stockton and Downtown Optometry to determine your unique triggers and risk factors.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your symptoms, review your medical history, and perform a thorough eye exam. We’ll create a personalized treatment plan that may include:

  • Noninvasive in-office energy therapy (IPL, RF, LLLT)
  • In-office procedures (meibomian gland expression)
  • Lifestyle changes (blinking exercises, reducing screen time)
  • Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops
  • Prescription drops to support tear production or reduce inflammation
  • Warm compresses & lid scrubs
  • Nutritional supplements (omega-3s)

MDelite iProX for IPL

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses gentle, warm light to revitalize your tear glands. The MDelite iProX can deliver precise pulses of light to the delicate skin around your eyes, stimulating the meibomian glands that produce the oily layer of your tears.

Healthy glands create more stable tears, reducing dryness and discomfort. IPL can also improve rosacea, redness, pigmentation, and fine lines, leaving your skin refreshed.

The MDelite iProX uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to gently heat the deeper layers of tissue around your eyes. This controlled heat helps improve blood flow to the meibomian glands, supporting their function and reducing inflammation, which can be a major contributor to dry eye symptoms.

RF therapy is a comfortable, noninvasive treatment that improves tear quality and relieves dryness. The heat also stimulates collagen production, helping tighten skin and reduce wrinkles around the eyes.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), or photobiomodulation, uses low-energy, invisible light to promote healing. Unlike IPL or RF, it doesn’t generate heat, making it safe to apply directly to sensitive skin like eyelids.

The MDelite InfinityPro uses this light to reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and stimulate meibomian gland function. LLLT is a gentle procedure that can relieve dry eye symptoms, improve eye health, and offer skin health benefits like reducing puffiness and enhancing a youthful look around the eyes.
